Do you know the difference between watches that “flicker” and those that “tick”? No, this is not about comparing quartz and mechanical watches. By exploring these distinctions, we enter the world of some of the rarest complications: Seconde Foudroyante and Jumping Seconds. Both were born from the pursuit of absolute precision, yet they are executed in entirely different ways. Each of them requires extremely complex technical solutions and virtuoso craftsmanship to bring to life.

For centuries, inquisitive minds and master watchmakers have tried to solve the problem of ultra-precision. They forced watches, through purely mechanical means, to measure time down to the very last second — behind which, in fact, another one was hidden, known as Seconde Foudroyante, or the lightning second. With the same mission, another complication entered the world of watchmaking — one in which time is indicated by a hand or disc that moves one position at a time. This is Jumping Seconds. At first glance, these complications may seem similar, but in reality they solve very different tasks. Let us take a closer look at how they differ.

The Flickering Motion of Seconde Foudroyante

This striking complication is often found in chronographs, born from the desire to measure certain time intervals with a watch — and to do so with precision down to fractions of a second. In this system, a dedicated hand moves evenly and smoothly around the dial, completing one full revolution in just 1 second.

The main characteristics of Seconde Foudroyante:

  • it measures and displays fractions of a second — usually ¼, ⅙, ⅛, or 1/10 — on a small subsidiary dial, using a jumping hand motion to divide a second into visible fractions
  • the movement of the hand and the number of its jumps per second are directly related to the frequency of the escapement — the key mechanism that converts mainspring energy into impulses for the balance wheel
  • most often it is positioned on a subdial (or subdisc), although it may also be integrated with a central hand

With this technical solution, the hand makes jumps, almost as if it is flickering, which demands a significantly higher level of energy consumption. It must move at a very high angular speed and stop instantly several times per second. This type of mechanism is found primarily in watches from luxury-segment brands such as Zenith El Primero, Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre, Habring² Foudroyante, and others.

Because such high energy consumption quickly depletes the power reserve, watches equipped with this complication sometimes even include an additional barrel dedicated specifically to powering Seconde Foudroyante, which is typically sufficient for around three hours of operation. To activate the flickering Seconde Foudroyante, all that is needed is the press of a button, while pressing it again returns the hand to its starting position.

The Ticking “Jump” of Jumping Seconds

Jumping Seconds (Deadbeat Seconds) is a complication in high-end mechanical watches in which a dedicated seconds hand advances in one-second increments, similar to the motion of a seconds hand in quartz watches. This means the watch “ticks” every second rather than moving in a smooth sweep, as in most mechanical models. In this complication, energy is rhythmically released, something that is often seen, for example, in models by A. Lange & Söhne.

The essence of Jumping Seconds can be summarized briefly:

  1. 🎯 Discreteness. The hand remains perfectly still for exactly one second, then suddenly jumps to the next marker. Just like in a quartz watch — but inside, it is purely mechanical.
  2. 🎯 Double escapement. The mechanism uses a secondary escapement that accumulates energy and releases it exactly once per second.
  3. 🎯 Remontoir (remontoir d'égalité — a constant-force device) — the secret of precision. This mechanism ensures a perfectly even supply of energy regardless of the state of wind in the mainspring. Thanks to it, the “jumps” remain consistently precise.

There is a certain engineering irony hidden here. Mechanical watchmaking deliberately imitates quartz, and this is one of the most complex technological challenges that watchmakers set for themselves. Why? To prove: “We can do anything.”

The Origins and Examples of These Complications

The idea of such complications first appeared in the late 19th century — scientific research, military needs, and sporting competitions, especially horse racing, all required high precision. Seconde Foudroyante emerged from the need to record fractions of a second in dynamic scientific observations that demanded perfect synchronization. Jumping Seconds was born from the requirements of high-precision astronomical observation. Later, in the 20th century, companies such as Rolex and Omega adapted these technologies for their wristwatch models.

Today, interest in such complex mechanisms has almost disappeared, as electronics can provide these functions much more easily and accurately. Yet the very essence of haute horlogerie lies in achieving the most perfect results through jewelry-like engineering, and in the appreciation of mechanical watchmaking as an art form that distinguishes unique brands on the market through such defining characteristics:

  • Seconde Foudroyante — displays fractions of a time interval within a single second, with the hand rotating (a full revolution) to create a “flickering” effect
  • Jumping Seconds — displays full seconds, with the hand moving in “jumps,” and the watch audibly “ticking”

Attempts to develop reliable Seconde Foudroyante and Jumping Seconds mechanisms continue. Among the stars of Seconde Foudroyante, one can find such iconic models as:

  • Hublot King Power Foudroyante with its aggressive design and vivid display of the lightning-fast hand
  • Girard-Perregaux Pour Ferrari Rattrapante Foudroyante (Ref. 9020) — the most famous model released in collaboration with Ferrari at the end of the 1990s
  • Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 Chronograph Foudroyante (Ref. 9021), distinguished by its curved rectangular Art Deco-style case, combining this retro design with a chronograph movement; it is often equipped with an automatic caliber operating at 4 Hz and delivering accuracy to ⅛ of a second

  • Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic True Second with its clean and elegant dial — a rare model from a limited edition
  • F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain Seconds with a tourbillon and “jumping” seconds, featuring three subdials and a power reserve indicator
  • Patek Philippe Ref. 5275P — an anniversary model in platinum with a gold guilloché dial, in which not only the seconds but also the hours and minutes “jump”

So, Foudroyante Seconds and Jumping Seconds are two ways of saying the same thing: “Time is not merely a flow — it is made of atoms, and we know how to count them.” For many connoisseurs of exclusive complications and luxury watches, this is a philosophy, a way of understanding and appreciating how many engineering ideas, painstaking labor, patience, and talent stand behind every component of a watch movement — including the small hand on the dial. It is precisely such masterpieces, capable of splitting time into “flickering” fragments or freezing it for seconds only to catch up in “jumps,” that remind us all that watchmaking is true art.
